The shift went quickly, the day was long but time flew by as he enjoyed his work. Ice cream floated off the shelves, so to speak as the hot weather made everyone in Diagon Alley stop in for some frozen goodness. He had refilled the stock of Berry Blue Slushy Vanilla no less than three times, as it was on sell today. His hands were sticky, his elbows sore from twisting the scoop, and his back ached from lifting the big tubs from the backroom chiller. He did not mind, he loved working at the parlor. It made him feel like he had done something constructive with his day.
He washed his hands in the staff bathroom, and hung his ice cream colored apron on the small hook beside his locker. With a smile he moved from the back, and sat down at one of the window seats. His coworker had arrived early, and was now hard at work behind the counter. Artemis' eyes moved up to check in on him while he paused in reading the latest Quibbler. Although his body ached, he felt like her earned his salary today. It was a good feeling, one that clashed harshly with his normal feelings of depression and social anxiety. Today had been a good day, and he wanted to relax and enjoy his milk shake, read the paper, and watch the people come in and out of the cold shop.
The bell rang over the door, and he nodded as a mother ushered five children in. They lined up and pointed out which ice creams they wanted. Artemis watched his coworker use his wand to make the ice cream float out unto long boat bowls. Various topping danced through the air and landed on the boats as the kids clapped and giggled. He felt it was a horrible waste of magic, and turned his attention back to the Quibbler and the latest rant about the Headmaster of Hogwart's School, and the rumors of his dead daughter's return. Artemis did not entirely understand it, but his curiosity was piqued. His eyes danced over the article, and soon he was locked firmly inside his own mind. He no longer saw the customers coming and going.
Artemis was in his safe place, once again.
