Ayden stepped off of the last stair and into the vast room that was known as the owlery. She walked over to the window and peeked out, the snow-covered grounds looking especially empty today since the school was on a lockdown. It made no sense to Ayden why: She couldn't see the danger. But the headmaster had seen fit to lock everyone up like puppies in a kennel, so this was as close to the outside world as Ayden could get.

Ayden sighed as she leaned against the sill, reaching up and unclasping the lock on the window before pushing it open. The cool breeze felt refreshing on her face as she took a deep breath. She smiled and leaned forward, head resting against the side of the window as she watched a flock of birds fly by slowly. It was moments like this, moments where she could just sit and think, that Ayden truly cherished.

She took one more deep breath before stepping back and closing the window. She pulled her hair up into a messy bun as she walked over to the stall where her barn owl, Eggroll, was sleeping. Upon her approach the owl woke up and hooted affectionately, causing Ayden to smile. "Hello Eggroll!! I've missed you so!!" Ayden said as she unlatched her gate and allowed the owl to soar around the room once before it perched on her shoulder. She fed Eggroll a treat before walking back over to the bench beneath the window and sitting down, planning to waste away the afternoon with her beloved pet.
