The Outer Layer
Physical Appearance; The first thing one would notice about Ellie would be her height - or lack thereof. It's not that she's terribly short - like, primordial short - but rather that she's petite. On her tippy-toes, she's barely under five feet flat, just a few centimeters, actually, but the difference is not worthy enough to note in her mind. If asked her height, Annabelle would reply 'five feet,' the little white lie having been uttered by her lips often enough for her to almost believe it true - almost - and that it may seem that she says it proudly, maybe even a bit arrogantly, as if she were very defensive about the matter. Even as if she were daring anyone to challenge her about it. Although, she has come to terms with the fact that, at fifteen years old, she has little time to actually reach five feet. Her height disables her from being able to see above the heads of most others, and forces her to stand in the front whenever group pictures are taken. Because of this, she hates it. Still, she has a few years to get a growth spurt - it's not that she stopped growing at a young age, but that she's just always been small for her age.
Despite her petite, seemingly fragile body, Ellie is surprisingly fit for someone of such a small frame. Looking at her childlike face and cherubic cheeks, her slim neck, narrow shoulders tapering down into a flat chest and a slight waist beside even slighter arms and small hands, no one could possible imagine the agility she holds.
Barely reaching five feet at her tallest on her tippy-toes, Ellie is not the type of person anyone would consider imposing. She is thin, but not underweight at all for her height at about ninety pounds. But, her limbs are skinny, despite her strength, and make her appear frail and weak. However, her bones do break easily, as she has learned through various childhood experiences. Yet, when people see the small fragile-looking girl, they tend to think that she is underweight. Even if she were average height, she would still appear to be so small and delicate looking that most would overlook her or just pass her off as a little kid. Also, on her left shoulder blade, there is a scar where she got burned, but seeing at she rarely wears clothes that reveal that part of her body, not many people know about it.
She's neither heavily built, nor voluptuous and curvy. Instead, she has a plain thin body, with a flat chest and only a slightly narrow waist, giving her the overall appearance of a young, prepubescent girl. It's not a body that would turn heads, and her height doesn't help that fact either. Although, this may be due to the fact that she has yet to hit puberty, and is still awaiting a growth spurt. Due to this, and her height, she's not exactly gaunt; her sparse curves somehow manage to be soft, other than her protruding collar bones and back bones. Her frame is delicate-looking and petite, her arms thin and frail, her hands small with thin, short fingers. Her small size gives her an advantage, however, by making her quick, agile, and light, although her clumsiness does happen to hinder that speed often, resulting with her tripping over her own two feet.
The petite girl's most prominent feature would have to be her eyes - not because they're particularly beautiful, but because they're so expressive. They're wide and round, and seem to draw people in. Framed by long eyelashes, they are brilliant hues of blue, from shades of cerulean and indigo, to amethyst and sapphire, and sometimes even almost black. If one were to look closely, one wold find that, amidst the bright pools of blue, lighter speckles - in a color that could almost be called icy blue - dot her arises. Her eyes lay out all her emotions for the world to see - her eyes are, truly, the windows to her soul. just by looking at them, one would know what she was thinking.
Ellie's hair has changed only in length throughout her life so far. The color is hard to describe, as many factors affect how it appears to people. In a general sense, it is a very bright red that usually appears orange; in soft light, it's gold hues come out, while in hard light, a reddish-gold color highlights the thick strands. Wetness is also a factor in the color it appears to be; a generalization would be to say that the more saturated it is with water, the darker and shinier her hair appears. but then again, that's true with all hair, isn't it? Ellie's bangs are parted at the right and fall from her hairline into her eyes; usually, some section of them is pinned up with a cute bow or barrette or ribbon. The rest of her hair falls down freely in ringlets, the curls thick and never cooperating enough to stay tied up when she tries to. She rarely applies a straightening charm to it, since it takes too complicated to do on a daily basis, but on special occasions she may. She usually, however, straightens her bangs quickly and easily. As for the rest of her hair - until about this past summer, the thick curls had reached their peak and went down to her mid-back, but upon entering her fifth year at Hogwarts, Ellie felt that she needed to look older and more mature, and thus the scissors came out. So, after angling three mirrors, one of them full-length, to allow herself to see the back of her head as she cut, the petite wizard snipped off the long strands. Too late before she realized that the shorter hair made her look even more childish. The result was a head of uneven choppy layers almost down to her shoulders, but it didn't look bad so she didn't feel the need to go to a parlor and get it fixed up. And, although she preferred how she looked a lot older with the longer hair, she will agree that the shorter strands are much easier to manage. Now, in the back, her hair ends at the nape of her neck, while in the front it falls down a little passed her shoulders, the effect being that of an angled upside-down u.
Ellie's hair tops a round face reminiscent of childhood innocence and wonder. It is often because of this and her size that people mistake her for a child, despite her constant attempts to make herself seem older. Her complexion is a clear, pale peach color, even throughout her face and body. In the winter, it can sometimes look almost translucent. She does not tan easily, but rather becomes afflicted with sunburn if faced with direct sunlight for too long. ((Somehow, though, this does not seem to deter her from staying outside for too long.) Ellie's facial features are small and rounded, fitting in with her overall childlike appearance. Her forehead is larger than average, despite being constantly hidden under her bangs, and is situated above round-shaped eyebrows perched atop wide doe-like eyes. Her cheekbones are wide, hidden beneath the soft flesh of her flushed cheeks, dotted with freckles throughout and positioned around a small button nosed, slightly perked up at the end. Her lips are pale and thin, and when the corners of them are upturned into a smile - into a true smile - a dimple appears in each cheek, giving her the look of a small innocent child, carefree and full of wonder.
When it comes to clothing, Ellie chooses whatever she deems comfortable. At Hogwarts, she wears the uniform skirt and robes with few to no alterations, often trying to make her skirt a bit longer and sometimes forgetting to tie the tie if she's in a rush or too tired to care. (This, however, often leads to embarrassment, and she usually tries to remember to tie it.) Also, she doesn't care enough to tuck in the shirt, as the sweater or robe usually covers it anyway.
Outside of school and on weekends, Ellie will usually just pick any random outfit and throw it on. Often, she will wear jeans, basketball shorts, cargo pants, skirts, or dresses with hooded shirts or sweaters in the winter, and t-shirts or any other kind of shirt in the warmer months. She dresses modestly, preferring that her skirts and dresses don't rise above her knees, and mostly she wears pastel or bright colors - pinks and yellows and whites. Boots or sandals or sneakers are fine shoes for her, and she prefers her clothes loose, since they allow more room to move and she is constantly moving around. She doesn't care about makeup like most girls her age do, and her hair is rarely tied up, instead adorned with a simple ribbon or bow to hold part of her bangs back.
The Inner Layer
Patronus;
memory , When Ellie was about four or five years old, there was a huge party with her entire family on her mother's side. She doesn't remember the reason because she was so young at the time - it was probably a birthday or something - but somehow, through all the festivities, she ended up lost in the house and locked in a small dark closet. No one came to get her for hours, during which time Ellie was hopelessly scared. She thought that they had all forgotten about her. When they finally did find her, she was huddled into a corner and crying. Her mother comforted her and alleviated her fears, but she still came out to be afraid of darkness and small spaces. After her mom found her in the dark closet and took her out, she gave her a small bronze bell, and told her that whenever she rang it, she would come running, and that she should use it whenever she needed his help. Ever since then, she's worn the bell on a string around her neck, but while her mom was still living, she did not ring it once. It wasn't until after her mom died that she started to ring it, just to assure herself that her mother was with her.
animal , a porcupine - Porcupine's are faithful and trusting, unassuming and reminiscent of childhood innocence and wonder. If Ellie were to be an animal, she would be a porcupine. They are good-natured, sweet and childlike, and carry a defense that they rarely use and only when feeling threatened.
Boggart; her father - not exactly him, but the thought that what he says about her is true; that she really is just a stupid worthless girl who can't do anything right ever.
Strengths; cheerful; loving; easy to please; puts others before herself; helpful; retains a childlike innocence; determined to change the world; has pride in her family; brave and committed; thoughtful and sensitive; compassionate; friendly; has a big heart.
Weaknesses; too eager to please others; has an inferiority complex and thinks that everyone is better than she is; sensitive to criticism; clueless; will avoid confrontation at all costs; physically weak; a bit of a door-mat; lacks self-esteem; impulsive; wears her heart on her sleeve; honest to the point of bluntness; controlled by her fears; clumsy; stubborn; does not believe in herself.
Personality; Ah. Ellie... Words can only paint half the picture of her personality; the rest will be left up to one's own interpretation through interaction with her. But, you must first be warned - this particular picture is not completely beautiful, nor always aesthetically pleasing. No, the brush strokes will be broad and thin, in clashing colors of the entire spectrum, and the end result will not entirely be what you may have expected. Because Annabelle Petunia is a girl of surprises, as you might soon learn. And whether you like it or not, she will be who she is. Just try to change it - I dare you.
Most people are able to read Ellie like an open book, but Ellie doesn't claim to know her true self. Instead, she settles for whatever conclusions others draw for her - all the rumors whispered in the corridors, the taunts thrown at her from across the Great Hall, the compliments scribbled by professors on her homework mixed in with cutting jokes meant to lighten the mood made at her own expense. It is from these encounters that Ellie infers the substance to her character and self-worth.
She has a loud personality, but it's as if the volume is on mute. When she first meets someone, she is shy and quiet beyond belief, always nervous about the impression she is giving off. She will speak very little, making her responses seem like curt retorts. Around people she knows and is comfortable around, however, she can be very outgoing and cheerful. It all really depends on who she is around, where she is, and how many people are there. Although her personality can be very different based on who she's around, there are some attributes about her that never change. She always does her best, no matter what she's doing, and tries her absolute hardest. Whether it's an old friend or a complete stranger, she tries to please everyone. She tends to worry about everyone around her, and puts them before herself. She wants people to like her and worries about what everyone thinks of her, always striving to help other.
In her family, Ellie has always been compared to her older brother. Because of this - and the fact that she rarely lives up to her father's expectations of her - she has developed an inferiority complex of sorts. She was never good enough to please her father like her brother did - always too shy, too small, too weak. (It didn't help that she was half Asian growing up in a mostly Caucasian society, and therefore had a slightly different appearance than everyone else.) Her dad has always expected too much of Ellie , and because of this, she has become sensitive to criticism, no matter how constructively it is presented. She often tries to hide this, but the fact of the matter is that she takes criticism as a personal attack. Her inferiority complex leads her to avoid competitions - since she pretty much feels that she cannot win - , not try out for the Quidditch team - again, that fear that she won't make it onto the team, on top of her fear of heights - , and to have a tendency of seclusiveness and timidity.
Her appearance gives off a frail, innocent, and clueless effect, which, in fact, is true. She knows very little about how hard the real world can be, and there are many things she does not understand. Most innuendos or other such comments go right over her head, others laughing while she remains confused. She's naive, which tends to annoy others at points, but mostly makes others want to protect her.
More often than not, Ellie won't dare to call anyone out, not even in a private conversation. After all, accusing someone of lying invariably leads to conflict and she prefers to avoid conflict at any and all costs. Yes, there are instances in which it's unavoidable, but in the majority of her daily interactions, Ellie will choose kneeling down and begging over standing tall and offering a challenge. The more fights you pick, the less friends you have and if there is one thing Ellie desperately desires it's to be liked. This is one of her greatest strengths, as well as her greatest weakness.
Despite her constant attempts to keep an open mind and reluctance to take a stand and fight, Ellie has a surprising stubborn streak for such a small timid girl. Once her mind fixates on an idea it doesn't shake loose easily. Her non-existent self-esteem serves as the perfect example. No matter the compliments or praise she receives, no matter the dormant talent she discovers and awakens, no matter the people who try day after day to reach her, the idea that Ellie will one day consider herself more than just a little worthless girl is laughable.
And yet, Ellie 's greatest desire is to change the world. Yes, she's small and weak and could easily be broken - she acknowledges all of this, but still, she tries to make a difference. Years of watching Muggle cartoons and playing with action figures as a child has given her ideals of a world of heroes and villains and good and evil, and has gifted her with a strong sense of justice and righteousness. It's because of this that she dreams of being a hero, of changing the world for the better and making a difference in someone's life.
One thing about her that sets her apart from most people is her courage, commitment, and values. She is brave beyond anyone else her age or size. When she starts something, she sticks to it until the very end. She is firm about her beliefs, and it takes a lot to waver her opinion. When her mind is set to something, she will carry it out until the task has been fulfilled, and there is very little that can change that. Whether its her beliefs, values, or ideas, she'll stick with it. Consequences mean nothing to her as long as she's doing what she believes is right, what her heart tells her.
Openly warm, her mentality is somewhat abstract, as she has an affinity to be a dreamer at times. Her emotional state, as she 'wears her heart on her sleeve,' causes her to be somewhat reactive to things that hurt her, expressing her emotions easily and being hurt, becoming happy, etc., easily, but also easily getting over it and returning to her generally content state of mind. Despite her initial shy demeanor, she is lively and expedient if she believes it is right, and is, if possible, imaginative in a practical way. Despite this, Ellie is easily made apprehensive, but her own actions and decisions cause her to be this way. She is impulsive and rarely thinks before acting, only following her gut reactions, the consequences of this causing her to be vulnerable and easily hurt, her emotions on display for the world to see. Trust comes easily to her - she earns it just as easily as she places it in others, for she believes that everyone is good, they just deserve a chance to prove themselves. This is also another reason why she tends to get hurt often - others take advantage of her trust and vulnerability, on top of the fact that most could easily overpower her physical being.
Despite constantly being taken advantage of, she is honest and keeps her integrity, never going back on her word. Courtesy is another trait she possesses - she is thoughtful of others and sensitive to their emotions and feelings, almost always able to sympathize with them. Despite this, she is quite dense to the emotions of others when aforementioned 'other' is flustered, nervous, or experiencing something she can't relate to.
She is generally responsible, always following through with her duties, and works well with others, given that said others are cooperative with her. She is loyal, showing her allegiance to people and things easily, devoted to her family, friends, and the other important people in her life, which is the reason she was sorted into Hufflepuff. But then again, who wouldn't be loyal to their families? She is enthusiastic, as well, having a strong affinity towards people just as they are drawn to her kind, caring nature, and shows an eagerness and willingness to work with others. She is open-minded, receptive and interested genuinely in the opinions and ideas of others - she loves to hear what others say.
Self-control isn't one of the traits Ellie possesses, in her actions and feelings, anyway. As mentioned previously, she is quite impulsive, and her emotions are displayed in all her impulsive actions - one would have to be extremely dense not to see what she was feeling. She is also not initiative - intentionally, anyway - most of the time, preferring to let others take the glory by starting movements and actions. Her impulsive actions, however, sometimes cause her to initiate things, although she never usually means to.
Compassion is another of her big traits - she has compassion beyond the amount of compassion any human being should have, and can often be seen crying with someone who is hurt, laughing with someone who is happy, comforting someone who is sad. She can't bear to hear a kitten mewling, or a child crying, or someone being yelled at, and often feels their emotions as her own and proceeds to comfort them. Because of this, she tends to cry often and easily, at every small hurt or unkindness, and she hates it - she hates how easily she cries and wishes her tears wouldn't betray her emotions so often. Little does she know that most would know her emotions even without her tears.
Her values set her apart from others - she tends to strive for the betterment of the world, nearly always. She works to help others, and is often involved in helping other people in a direct way, and has a lot of day-to-day contact with the other students at Hogwarts. She works with others well, having close relationships with many and establishing friendships where none would spring otherwise. She isn't, by nature, a competitive person, and tends to avoid engaging in activities that pit her abilities against those of others when there are clear win-and-lose outcomes. She doesn't make decisions well, either, and is actually a very indecisive person, never able to decide on one course of action when she actually does stop to think about it.
She is friendly and caring, and, despite wanting others to like her, never bases herself on anyone else's opinions or changes herself because others don't like her. She loves to be her own person, and she is, by nature, a very strange person with odd habits. The first thing someone would notice about her is that she is extremely shy. Although she appears simple, she is much more complicated than many people get to know. When she gets to know someone, however, she is cheerful and friendly, to a reasonable extent. Ellie knows when it is not the time to cheer, and as far as intelligence in school related areas goes - she is, although not the top in her classes, somewhat above average -, she is quite dense when it comes to anything else; she doesn't possess the best common sense in the world either. On a normal day, Ellie is very clumsy, tending to run into things or tripping and falling. Occasionally, she sobers down a bit, particularly when she feels like a nuisance or that people are always protecting her, such as in the case of her family; she feels as if she was a burden to them and often finds herself thinking that they might be happier if she wasn't around.
Despite her conflicting personality, many parts of her being are consistently consistent. Her openness allows an appreciation for art, emotion, unusual ideas, imagination, and curiosity, while her conscientiousness allows her to aim for achievement in relation to her often spontaneous behavior - she is full of ideas, has a vivid imagination, spends time reflecting on things, and often comes up with abstract ideas. Her extroversion allows her to seek stimulation and the company of others - she pays attention to details, tries not to make messes of things, although it often results in quite the opposite, and avoids shirking her duties, she is comfortable around others, starts conversations, and has much to say once you get her talking. - and her agreeableness causes her to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others - she is interested in people, feels others' emotions as if they were her own, has a soft heart, makes others feel at ease, easily sympathizes with others, puts others before herself, and often feels overwhelming concern for the problems of others. Neuroticism may also be considered one of her personality traits, as she experiences unpleasant emotions easily, but is balanced out as she experiences contrastingly pleasant emotions just as easily.
Ellie is also an accident child. She is prone to danger, and is very clumsy and quick to react. She is extremely accident prone, and ends up tripping on her own feet most of the time if there's nothing else to trip over. She is absentminded and a dreamer - an idealist in all forms - and has a short attention span. One thing she can always concentrate on, however, is cooking. She loves to cook and bake, and just to make food out of nothing, as if it appeared by magic. Conversely, she would rather make food from scratch then conjure it by magic. And she loves to fly, to have the feeling of being free. It's about the only thing she can do without falling.
Despite her own naivety and scatter-brained-ness, the small girl is very sensitive to the feelings of others. Often, she can associate with their feelings, and feels them as if she were in their place. She cries with others, smiles with them, laughs with them - it's just in her nature to feel for other people, and she often has no control over when a wave of someone else's emotions will wash over her and draw tears.
Essentially, anyone who has met her at least once knows her amiable, agreeable nature - but most of all, they know that the small girl wears her heart on her sleeve. It can be damaged, so to speak, during daily, everyday activities, and her emotions are expressed easily, despite how hard she tries to hide them. One can't help but see how she feels, and things generally get to her and affect her easily. Despite this, and despite that one might think that someone who expresses his or her emotions so easily wouldn't be able to let go of negative feelings and unhappiness, Ellie would prove them all wrong - quite the opposite, she lets negative feelings go before they can burden her, or at least tries to. Sometimes, though, they do end up burdening her, and the poor girl is left wondering what she has done wrong. By displaying her emotions so easily, many people often take advantage of her many intricate and complex emotions that she displays so openly; in the end, as it almost always ends, she ends up getting hurt, and then forgiving and allowing a second chance.
If there's one thing she likes to do above others, it's singing. When singing, her voice is clear and soft, not the normal quiet stutter she normally speaks with. For her, it is far easier to express herself through singing than through speaking, through allowing her voice to reach high crescendos and drop to decrescendos. She developed a love of singing when she started writing musics - that is, songs. From a very young age, she started to write songs, and after that, singing them came naturally. Often, she'll accompany her singing by playing her guitar, which she also loves to do.
She has a good heart and a strong unyielding will. Her small size makes her very quick and agile. Sometimes, Ellie 's kindheartedness makes her too trusting of people, which could lead to her ultimate downfall. She isn't very strong, but knows how to take care of herself. Most of the time, she doesn't understand the situations she throws herself into without thinking, but she doesn't underestimate her opponents. She is openly afraid of many things, although she often tries to hide it.
Although many people may bully her and disregard her because of her scrawny build, she still manages to keep her innocence and amiability in tact, two of her more appealing qualities. This, however, makes her easy prey. She is often pushed around and roughened into situations she'd rather not be involved in, as well. On top of that, she is extraordinarily clumsy, usually tripping over her own feet; sadly, she has a habit of falling onto her face when she does. Gravitation seems to favor her face being attracted to the ground. She is very accident prone.
Despite that, Ellie is a sweet and gentle soul, generally likable and friendly, with many qualms about saying 'no.' She isn't judgmental and tends to think the best of people, which can often land her in trouble. She has always been almost childish in her naivety, far too trusting. She is stubborn in her beliefs, too narrow-minded for her own good, which she gets from her mother. For the most part, however, Ellie acts her age: young. She is quite innocent and can become nervous and embarrassed easily.
One of her most very admirable traits is that she is almost always honest and genuine. The only time she doesn't tell the truth, with very few exceptions, is when she wants to keep others from worrying about her. Her innocence and naivety makes it seem as if she wouldn't be able to keep secrets, but when entrusted with one, she does her absolute best to keep it from others.
One of Ellie 's best attributes is her compassionate, loving, affectionate, understanding and accepting nature. She is compassionate and thinks of others always before herself, never swaying or hesitating when it comes to supporting and remaining loyal to the ones she loves. She tries her hardest always to see how her own actions will affect others so she doesn't hurt anyone, and the accepting and considerate part of Ellie makes her able to relate to others easily. She might be somewhat shy, but this girl will never hesitate to try and comfort even a stranger if she sees them upset.
Nonetheless, she is a very emotional person, unable to disguise her often passionate feelings. She often acts impulsively, though this seems to hurt her more often than not, and consequences don't matter to her if she is doing what she believes in. She is extremely loyal and dedicated to all her friends and family. Her loyalties are deep, and cannot be explained by word but, rather, are controlled by an almost instinctual part of her subconscious. When she is roused, rational thinking goes out the door.
Another of her weak points is when she is put in a situation in which she needs to work under pressure; usually, situations like these will end up in disaster - she can only produce quality results in anything she does when she does it on her own time, at her own pace, in a comfortable environment. She tends to fear and cower before authority figures, including but not limited to the police, teachers, etc., and cannot control what others do at all, intentionally. She is in no way in a position to influence others intentionally, and most times does it unintentionally, just through her kind words and impulsive actions.
For someone normally so easygoing, her ferocity in battle is unusual. When enraged, she is truly an imposing figure; although, when she does get angry, she is usually not taken seriously because she happens to cry when angry. She was never the type to sit back and watch idly; her impulses guide her into action, no matter how reckless or foolish. This contrast with her polite, happy side is almost bizarre. She is always willing to fight for the sake of others, even those she doesn't know, so long as she believes in their cause. She is also incredibly motivated, willing to work unceasingly for a personal cause.
When enraged or deeply believing in something, she acts of her own accord. She will not hesitate to break or bend rules if she supports the cause; this, however, often lands her in trouble. Despite this, she does not enjoy being the life of the party and the center of attention, but she tends to stand back in the shadows. Her frequent escapades and passionate beliefs often land her in trouble.
Although the young girl isn't overly bold or forward, she's quite a bit curious. She asks questions very often, for there is so very much that she wonders about; sometimes, she may even ask a stranger a question if it is bothering her enough. She constantly wonders, and worries, about many things, and enjoys musing on various different topics.
Despite the complicated tangled mass of a personality she possessed, she is quite easy to read, especially by those who know her. Just like everyone else, she smiles when she's happy, cries when she's sad. Anger usually brings tears to her eyes, and over-whelming joy causes her to laugh cheerfully. Really, she's just like everyone else - nothing special, just plain old Ellie .
As the youngest child in her family, Ellie is frequently being spoiled by her brother, who feels the need to protect her and nurture her every whim. Rather than spoiling her, however, this has only made Ellie more conscience of how much she owes him, and how she will probably always be living in his shadow.
Ellie is also very forgiving. Usually she passes off negative comments with a shaky giggle as she always tries to be friendly, unless the comment personally hurt her; then she will impose her wrath upon the inflicter.
Ellie is easily 'made to do' a lot of things - that is, she experiences emotions easily. She is easily made nervous [which in turn gets her easily confused], easily startled / frightened / scared, easily convinced of lies, easily depressed, easily saddened, easily worried, and constantly second-guesses herself. To start [and the girl doesn't quite know why], whenever she gets nervous it's impossible for her to pay attention to what's going on, let alone listen to anyone. This often gets her into trouble and she can't stand it, so she avoids high-stress situations at all costs. Only if she's made to will she do anything really daring, though she's open to doing most other things.
In correspondence with the previously mentioned trait of the young girl, her fear quite easily controls her. It controls her, far more than fear should ever control any one person. When she's really truly scared, she can't move. It chokes her, even, and she has to fight it just to breath, almost like she's having an asthma attack of sorts. She can't move, can't scream, and can't defend herself - worst case scenario. Ellie does her best to hide her fears from others. However, this is difficult, as she is scared by the simplest things, and unable to stand up for herself.
As mentioned before, Ellie is ridiculously clumsy. She'd trip over a blade of grass if it hit her toe the wrong way. The same goes for air. Atop being clumsy, she is forgetful. Remembering what she had for breakfast is hard enough, and though important memories will stay with her forever she finds it hard to recall more recent things. Also stated before, the girl is a ridiculous perfectionist. She doesn't mind the flaws of others, but cannot stand to see them in herself. She will go to any length to 'fix' them, always assuming that, in one form or another, she's got something wrong with her, and she feels as if she needs to fix them to please others.
She is compassionate, imaginative, reflective, and an idealist; also, she is expressive, in her own quiet, unobtrusive way, and lives up to her beliefs and values, while developing an emotional understanding of the world around her. As an idealist, she dreams of making the world a better place, of living in harmony and peace, and she longs to change the world for the better. Often, she can find meaning in her surroundings that have things about them otherwise unseen by anyone. She sees life as a wonderful mystery, her quest being to figure it out.
Criticism is often taken personally by her, and can usually hurt her easily-hurt feelings, even if it was intended to be constructive. She can adapt easily to changing circumstances, usually, and is prone to believe that people have changed just by their word, always allowing a second chance. She loves to acquire knowledge and finds something of interest in most subjects.
As for friendships, she prefers to have a few close and deep ones, as she feels most alone in large crowds. Due to this, and her claustrophobia, she often escapes away from large crowds.
She is, undeniably, quite 'normal' in many aspects, but there are certain things that set her apart from others, that make her different. She doesn't care about things other girls care about - being popular, make-up, clothes, boys - but rather, just cares about being herself. If there is someone she can't be herself to, she will, unless it somehow hurts their feelings, try to avoid being with that person, and will try to avoid confrontations even more. It's not that she doesn't like that person, it's just that, if she can't be herself with him or her, then he or she is probably of high-standing and can determine her future in the blink of an eye, so to speak. In truth, she'll try to please whomever it is that she can't be herself around, but still won't change herself.
In regards to optimism, one might think that Ellie 's glass is always half-full. Most of the time, she acts as if it is, but in reality, she just sees the contents of 'the glass' as, well, the contents of the glass. There's something in it, right? It may not have as much as one might want, but at least there was something, even if it left room for more want, more need. To her, as long as there's something in the glass, so to speak, even if it's just a drop, she's happy. That may seem as if her glass is always half full, but at times, it may seem half empty - despite the fact that it's already been explained that it only matters if there's at least something in the glass. Although, it's never 'half-empty' for her. Just for others, when she sees someone sad, or crying, or in pain. Then, she wishes that she could give their 'glass' some of the contents of hers, so to speak, to make them happy. If they try to push her away, however, when she tries to offer some of her happiness to fill up their glass, then she may get hurt, and easily, too, and avoid that person for a short amount of time, until she realizes that their need is more dire than hers.
She doesn't hold grudges - it's just impossible for her. She may get really upset at some point about something someone did or said, but after an hour, at most, of thinking about it, she'll just go and apologize, even if it wasn't her fault.
Most find her easy to become friends with and talk to, as she understands most emotions and will try to help others be happy as much as she can. Because of this, however, some people try to fool her, and it usually works, and help them do wrong or other such things. Whenever she realizes this, she is usually very hurt, but will still trust them, offering them the second chance they were never given before. Many find that she's like the adorable little sister they can talk to about anything, and the innocence she radiates in her warm smile and large brown eyes makes them feel the need to protect her, and makes them feel as if they're drawn to her.
Most can tell upon first meeting her that she possesses a gentle, patient, malleable nature and has many generous qualities that allow her to be friendly, good natured, kind and compassionate. She is sensitive to those around her, and can often pick up on how others feel immediately. In such cases, she will respond with the utmost sympathy and tact to any suffering she encounters. Many people tend to be drawn to her due to her easy going, affectionate, submissive nature, and she generally offers no threat or challenge to stronger and more exuberant characters. She can easily accept those around her and when thrown in a situation she doesn't agree with, if trying to extricate herself has failed, she will simply adapt, accepting what has happened.
Even so, her nature tends to be too otherworldly for the practical purposes of living in this world as it is. She usually exists and acts emotionally rather than rationally, instinctively more than intellectually, impulsively rather than thinking things through. She dislikes confinement, but is generally submissive; any rebellion that she does make, however, is personal, for the betterment of the general public.
Despite this, she tends to withdraw into a dream world where her qualities can bring satisfaction. She is versatile and intuitive, has a quick understanding for most things, and observes and listens well. She is also receptive to new ideas and atmospheres; all these factors combine and produce a remarkable creativity in her music, which is evident every time she sings or plays guitar.
As most can figure out upon meeting her, Ellie is usually never egotistical in her personal relationships and gives more than she asks for from friendships. She is delicate and innocent in these matters, and is easily hurt when betrayed, although she can also just as easily forgive. Even if she is betrayed countless times, she is intensely loyal and will remain faithful most times.
She's gullible, easily tricked, duped, and fooled. Ellie is agreeable and open to experience, and always tries to find the good side of everyone.
Overall, Annabelle Petunia Dursley is like a tree - blossoming at certain points, dying out at other times, but never stopping to grow until her branches scrape the sky.
The Past
History; Ellie's history starts with her parents, like everyone else's. Dudley Dursley and the woman who would become 'Mrs. Dursley' met in a muggle university and had a muggle wedding and settled down to raise a muggle family. A year after their marriage, they had a muggle son, and another year after that, another muggle son was born. And finally, a year after that, a little muggle girl was born to them.
Or so they thought.
Ellie was born on June fourteenth, a late spring day when the sun was shining and the roses were blossoming, as Annabelle Petunia Dursley, named after the mothers of both parents. from the moment she first opened her eyes, revealing bright blue irises, and from the shock of red hair on her head, her parents could easily see that she had inherited traits from both of them: her fathers bright eyes in her mother's gentle face with a smattering of freckles across her nose, topped with hair that was in the recessive genes of both parents. As she grew, her eyes became bluer and her hair became redder and her skin became frecklier, and she's retained the same appearance since.
Having been given a long name, Annabelle Petunia Dursley, was only the first complication of little Ellie's life. The second complication may have been that she was always smaller than other children. In her muggle school, the muggle children made fun of her and picked on her because of her size. That was only the beginning of her inferiority complex. The third complication was that since children found saying Annabelle too hard, they shortened it to the childish, cuter form of Ellie, as children tend to do. The name caught on, and now, at fifteen years old, it is the name she is called by. Despite her attempts to seem older, that name follows her around and brings her back to eleven years old every time.
the first four years of ellie's childhood were generally happy. the family of five was happy, despite the fact that the children grew up not knowing they're cousins and other relatives. they heard of the potters from their father once, and received christmas cards from them every so often, but they had never actually met them. for so long, they went without knowing that they had any cousins at all.
when ellie was four and a half years old, however, her mother caught an illness and passed away a few days before christmas. little ellie was too young to know what had happened - all she knew was that her mother was no longer with her, and that she'd never see her again. she cried for days, and after that, ellie grew up not knowing her mother. having been so young when her mom had passed away, she could barely even remember her. only the sound of her laugh, the soft smile she'd give ellie, stayed in her memory.
ellie and her brothers grew up with their dad in the house at number four privet drive. throughout her entire childhood, however, they never once used the cupboard under the stairs for anything; it remains unused, gathering dust and cobwebs, to this day.
although she grew up not knowing her mother, her brothers more than made up for it. starting from a young age, both of them would spoil her and protect her, and were maybe even a little overprotective. if she fell off the monkey bars at the playground, one of them would be there to catch her. if the muggles were picking on her, they'd chase them away. they were the best brothers she could ever ask for. their father, on the other hand, wasn't exactly the kind encouraging father she would have preferred. from a young age, her eldest brother had showed prodigious skill in various areas, and was always winning praise from dudley. ellie, on the other hand, was often being scolded, and made to feel inferior. she didn't do anthing wrong, but she didn't seem to be doing much right, either. her father always felt the need to point out her shortcomings, and she lived her chlidhood in the shadow of her oldest brother.
around five years old, ellie's non-muggle magic started to come out. and both her brothers', as well. strange, isn't it, that all three children of muggle parents would be wizards? well, maybe not that strange, since dudley probably had some sort of magic gene in him. but still.
her first actual experience with magic was when she was six years old, at first grade in a muggle school. before then, she'd had some expreriences, but they were just random bouts of magic, nothing substantial or anything. when she was six, though, it was during a recess break at school. some kids were picking on a boy, taking his snacks and making fun of his american accent, and it made ellie really really angry to see them taking advantage of him. she was stupid and impulsive then, though, and thought she could take all of them on her own. that, however, somehow ended with her and the american boy surrounded by the first-grade bullies, but just as they were about to attack them, as only first-graders can do, they weren't able to get past the edge of the sandbox that she and the boy were in. years later, she would realize that this was a sort of downgraded version of a protego charm, but it had been enough then for her to know she was different.
when ellie was seven, one day she stayed up late to wait for their dad to come home from work. her brothers had gone on to sleep, but she wanted to make sure he wasn't feeling lonely or anything, so she waited for him. when he came home, however, he was drunk and angry. all he wanted to do was sleep, but ellie had stayed up waiting for him and asked him how his day had went. he got angry at her, and hit her, calling her a stupid worthless girl. but she'd been standing at the landing on the stairs and had fallen backwards when he hit her. she broke her collarbone from the hit and her leg from the fall, and spent a month in the hospital. neither dudley nor ellie ever brought up the incident after he apologized once, and ellie forgave him, passing it off as an accident. even since then, however, deep inside, ellie has been slightly afraid of her father. he only hit her twice after that, but the verbal abuse continued and still continues to this day. but ellie never told anyone that he hit her, not even her brothers, and stuck with the story that she had just fallen down the stairs.
when annabelle was nine years old, her brother received a letter from hogwarts. her father burned the first one, but after that, when they kept coming, he seemed to have recalled something and decided to tell his son. dudley wasn't particularly thrilled, but alas, the following september ellie's oldest brother went off the hogwarts. and the year after that, her second-oldest brother also received a letter, and went off for magical schooling.
if ellie's self-esteem hadn't already been at an all-time low, it would have been then. anxieties that she wasn't special like her brothers could have eaten her alive, and her dad wasn't making it much better with his verbal abuse of her. fortunately, he hit her only a few times more, but it was his words that always hurt the most. most times after talking to him, she would be reduced to tears. that, of course, just made him assault her more with his words.
the summer of her eleventh birthday, ellie, too, received a letter to go to hogwarts. it was the third time representative wizards came to the family to explain that dudley's children were wizards. that august was ellie's first time in diagon alley, and she received her first pet, a small pygmy owl with russet feathers and amber eyes. she was drawn to it originally when it flew to her when she entered the shop and started pecking her head. so, she bought it. it was small and adorable and oh so cute, and she named him adelais.
And the following September, little ellie was off on the Hogwarts express, accompanied by both siblings and not knowing that her cousins were on the same train.
Once the first years had sailed across the lake during a thunder storm (through which ellie had cowered in the boat for most of the time) and had arrived in the castle, soaking wet and dripping on the floors, they were assembled outside of the doors to the Great Hall and lined up in alphabetical order, before proceeding into an enormous room in which at least three hundred people were seated. All eyes were on the first years, and little ellie dursley, with her bright red hair, felt herself shrinking into the crowd, keeping her head low and trying to blend in. Her anxiety only grew as names started to be called, and one by one the eleven-year-olds were seated on a stool with the Sorting Hat placed on their heads. Finally, the name Dursley, Annabelle Petunia rang out, and ellie scampered to the stool and sat down, as the hat was put on her head. It was big enough that it slipped right over
her eyes and ears, stopping at her nose. ellie was frightened, to put it lightly, as the hat sat there, debating with itself whether she should go into Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, and the few moments she had to sit there felt like they lasted forever. Just the thought that this hat could hear all her thoughts was scary enough - anyone would be frightened with all that magic on their heads. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, the small girl was sorted into Gryffindor. She hurried off the stool as soon as "Gryffindor!" was cried out and hastily placed the hat back on the stool before running toward the Gryffindor table. Just her luck, though, ellie tripped on her way off the stool and fell flat on her face. For the rest of her time at Hogwarts, none of the students would let that down, and most labeled her as a klutz from that moment.
Hogwarts was as great as she had expected, ellie soon found out; she just had to learn how to keep her curiosity in check and not go wandering off. She did, however, soon find out that of her brothers broke various rules on a daily basis usually, but she knew that she herself could never get away with it. She was too shy, too intimidated by many things to do any drastic rule-breaking. What's more, she found that she was very good at quidditch, but she was quite scared of heights and falling off a broom in midair. Although she wanted to try out for Quidditch, the fear of not making it onto the team kept her from trying, and, now in her fifth year, that same fear keeps her from doing that among many other things. at home, the verbal abuse continues, and little ellie cringes everytime she sees that her father has sent her an owl, for she knows that it will contain disappointed words and harsh accusations and something along that lines of 'you're a stupid girl.' which, of course, is not entirely true, seeing as ellie is at the top of her class. but either way, she's enjoying her time at hogwarts. For now, she'd just like to live her life and take one day at a time, never knowing what the future holds for her.

The wind was a soft, tender whisper through the night, brushing the young girl's cheek softly in passing. It came from the south, where the river lay, undisturbed in the darkness of the night, and went towards the north, toward which the small girl faced at the moment. Her dark hair blew lightly in the wind, the darkness bringing out its amethyst tints, and she raised a hand to push the strands back, only for them to be blown back onto her face. Bright violet eyes grazed over the layout of land that lay so peacefully below her, passing over each of the headstones the jutted out of the land in arranged order -- rows and rows of headstones beneath which hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of motionless bodies lay, with their unseeing eyes and still hands. So many beings gathered in this one spot... yet, none of them would ever again see day.
It was curious how Mirany had picked this particular night to visit the cemetery. It was far from a perfect night -- sure, there were stars glittering high in the sky with a sparkling radiance, curled in ribbons around the bright sliver of the waning crescent that was the moon. The breeze was neither strong nor cold, but carried a certain touch of potential energy, as if something great would happen on this night -- as if it needed to prepare itself. The sky itself was a dark curtain of velvety black, stars littered across its surface. Yet, everything was far from perfect, for the natural beauty of the night was hidden behind haze of clouds, and a mist had settled around the surface of the cemetery, causing the passing light of the moon to bathe everything in an eerie glowing light. So, why was it that the young girl had chosen such a creepy night to visit a place so depressing?
Even she herself knew not.
The night was calm, the quiet stillness and silence enveloping the vicinity of soul-less bodies, not with a serene sense of security, but with a smothering restlessnes -- as if something were going to happen, and the late night fog had done the perfect job of setting the scene. The moon and stars allowed just enough light for Mirany to see where she was going, but more would have been appreciated. And, despite the spectral quality of the night, it was a rare night -- rare because the light pollution from the nearby city of Tokyo didn't disturb the darkness of the night with its hazy fumes. No, the mist and clouds did that job just fine without help from the light pollution.
So, on a night so macabre, why would a small girl who usually disliked the night go to visit the cemetery on such a night? There was no reason for it: she had never known anyone who was now deceased -- well, anyone whom she had actually known. But maybe she had just felt the need to, or maybe she just needed to get out of the house, and this was the first place she went to.
Even if it was an eerie night full of potential horrors, and even if Mirany hadn't ever known her mother before she had passed away, she left her spot at the top of the hill on whose side the tombstones were placed, and traveled down the rows, picking up a small petunia that had struggled to grow between some bushes. Her mid-calf length pink boots made a small tap with each step she took, and the wind rustled the many gossamer layers of the white knee-length skirt she wore, until she finally stopped in front of one particular headstone -- one on which the name of her mother was inscribed.
Mirany knelt, placed the yellow flower in front of the headstone, and read the words that were engraved into it. They were words that she had read so many times that she had probably had them memorized by now. She had never personally known her mother, but now that she was gone, there was nothing Mirany could do about that, except honor her with a small petunia. Just a small flower for the life that that woman had given Mirany -- it seemed like a terribly selfish trade to Mirany. But, there was just nothing more she could do. Perhaps leaving the house in the dead of the night on a particularly eerie night would count for something.
Speaking of particularly eerie, just as the small Kurosaki girl stood up to leave, a cacophony of screams split through the air, and Mirany tensed, spinning around to face the direction from which it had come. Heart pounding in her throat, the small girl spun towards where it had come from and started running in that direction, acting purely on impulse, for there was nothing she could possible do were she to find some sort of monster there. Her curiosity only grew when a group of kids around her age ran from that direction, expressions of fear on their face, and along with it, Mirany's own fear grew. But she wasn't thinking, so she wasn't exactly aware of it at the moment.
She had reached the top of the hill by the time she stopped to catch her breath, but by then, the sound of the screams were far behind her, newly replaced by the caws of a flock of black birds leaving the area; Mirany shielded herself against them as they flew into the direction from which she had come, raising her forearms against their flurry of ebony feathers. And when they cleared up, the only thing left in their wake was a boy, sitting on the ground, staring at spot from which they had come. Mirany didn't know what she was doing as she walked over to him and held out a small hand to help him up -- for all she knew, he could have been the monster that had caused the previous clamor of shrieks and retreating ravens. But she wasn't one of judge, so, with her hand outstretched to him, she asked in a quiet voice, afraid to disturb the sudden stillness of the night, "Are you all right?"
