It was all she had ever known, after all. Lexi had been the middle child, and had grown int a quiet and thoughtful Ravnenclaw. One might think Lexi was bitter, longing and dreaming up a day when she alone gt t shine. But truthfully, Lexi was perfectly content remaining hidden from prying eyes. The shadows in which she hid in gave her a certain shelter. A shelter from all the things that she feared would hurt her. Trust that went all wrong, hope that only turned things worse, fairytale endings that didn't come true. Yes, Lexi was pessimistic, but by those standards she was pretty optimistic. All her views her kept inside, out of fear of judgement.More than anything, Lexi despised being given false hope. All it did was break her a little further, closer to the edge of utter and complete insanity.
For three months, the very person that knew Lexi best in the world disappeared. Vanished. Gone, with out a trace and it left her crestfallen and terrified. Ryan Wake had been her best friend since the Hogwarts train ride in her first year. The anxiety of having him gone, not knowing if her was still breathing, added to the stress of being landlocked in the muggle world over the summer with her alcoholic father and squib sister had nearly pushed her over than very thin line, nudging her gently over the edge of insanity. She was miserable, and it radiated of of her like nuclear waste in a meltdown. Not too long after being there, sleep went away. And then her appetite. By the time she boarded the Hogwarts express, she had deep purple bruises under her ever and had lost about 5 pounds. In attempts to blend in, Lexi dyed her hair a mud color. It was vile looking, at least to Lex. The bright blonde hair every one crooned over had been suffocated with a dirt color. She hated it, but at the same time it gave her a sense of comfort.
And then Ryan came back. She saw him at the Black Lake and talked to him for the first time in three, long, awful months. More than anything she wanted to hug him, yell at him and call him a stupid boy, tell him to never scare her like that ever again. But strangely enough, Ryan, her Ryan didn't remember her. Or anything for that matter. It shattered her heart into a thousand pieces when he told her he didn't know even her name. Amnesia, it seemed like. Obviously he was frustrated, but so was she and she wanted answers. It felt like everything in her whole world was slipping from her fingertips.
That day she went to the Black Lake by herself, not wanting for anyone to come and shatter the sliver of peace she had found in the storm she called a life. Her head rested between her knees, wand tucked away and all of her problems swirling around in her head. Even though she had started eating again, her appetite had left her that day once again and her ribs were plainly visible. The breeze was nice, not too cold but gave mercy to the grounds, dried from a hot, dry summer. Though it wasn't too drastic, Lexi shivered from the cold and kicked a stone hoping to pass the time and take her mind aside from the insanity strangling her reality.

Nothing made sense anymore. The train ride over to the castle felt like nothing but a distant dream to Ryan Wake as he sat towards the middle of the third cabin, making sure to keep the curtains closed each time he changed the bandage on his side. The paper-like wrap peeled slowly, bits of it still sticking to his skin, but eventually it all came off. He reached up above his head and took down the duffel bag he was given just before he left the old cottage. Ryan took out a new wrap and placed it over the open bite mark wound that seemed to be still fresher than ever.
It had been three months since he had been anywhere. Three whole months, plus all the information before that seemed to have vanished from the compounds of his mind. Sure as he looked around the cabin at different things and was insisted to buy some chocolate frogs from the food trolley, Ryan did notice some familiar things, but once again they only felt like something he had dreamed.
The first day back was just as he had expected. Tons of familiar faces, with not so familiar names, running up to him giving him hugs and telling him about how their summers went. But when he told them about his own, everyone seemed to laugh it off until he either got mad or just walked away. Though there was this one girl. Lexi. He had met her down by the black lake the other day. She happened to be his girlfriend, or well was...maybe still is? Ryan wasn't quite sure on that detail, but she did seem more familiar out of the whole lot that came to him. Maybe he had some strong feelings for her. She had offered him the chance for her to tell him some things to try to help with his memory, but half way into it he started to get sick, something he noted he had been doing a lot of lately, and run out on the poor girl.
Today, he had spent the day searching for the girl in between restroom visits to change out his bandage, having felt bad for leaving he like he did, and also because he felt a strange bond to her, somewhere down in the bit of his stomach. She made him forget about all the things that were going on, and he felt a little normal because of that.
It took half the day, but eventually he found her sitting out by the black lake, her legs drawn up to her chest with her head hanging between her knees. Ryan pulled his trench coat a bit tighter across him before walking over and taking a seat by her. "Hey there, miss...Lexi right?" He halfway told and halfway asked, trying to make sure he was putting names to the right faces.

Her older sister was the free spirited one that dreamed big and lived large. Lexi was the soft spoken one, the one who kept silent during hard times and kept the hurt to herself. The only person she ever told anything about her personal life or her family was Ryan, but she had been trying to keep her mind off of him after their meeting at the lake. Just as he came into her mind, he was there. Ryan. She heard noise and looked up with mild disinterest. Seeing him made her blush, like it always did. "Hey there, miss...Lexi right?" It sounded like her was talking and asking. The words were loud and fast and it took a few seconds for the words to register in her head, and actually make sense. So she blinked and took in a big breath. Lexi just wasn't a people person, truth be told. "Yes, Lexi. How are you, Ry?" She offered a small reassuring smile, hoping he wouldn't run off like he had yesterday.
Lexi didn't know what she had said or done, but he had left with a hurried "I have to go" and then ran. Probably something stupid, made him feel uncomfortable or bad about not being able to remember anything. It made her want to bang her head into a wall, it seemed she was always ruining everything that crossed her path.Today, though, he seemed happy enough and no longer angry. Something in him had changed... he was.... darker. Not that Lexi could figure out specifically what it was, or even cared to. He didn't even remember her, or anything. So it probably didn't even matter what stupid thing she had done now to reck everything. "Are you alright?... I mean, what happened yesterday? Did i do something wrong?" Lexi's voice was soft, and hurt was coming on a little too strongly in her voice.
She didn't blame him, no, not really. Everything she'd ever known had taught her that nothing good could ever last. And the amnesia really wasn't his fault, he probably wandered into the dark and hit his head against something again. He had done it before, the dark petrified him so badly. Dysfunction was all she knew, and she was used to it. But this was a different kind of pain, a different aching in her chest. What it was she didn't know, but she didn't like it. Not at all. Hopefully it would go away soon enough.

As Ryan took his seat, the lovely brunette sat there for a moment still staring off into space. At first, he wondered if he should say something. Even after he sat down she seemed to not have registered any of the sounds he had made from the crunching of the early fall grass beneath his feet or that of his voice. It was like she was dead to the world. Maybe he did this to her? If so, he felt sorry. He never meant to hurt anyone. Hell, maybe he did? Everything was still so fuzzy. Ryan's head was clouded with so many obscure thoughts that he didn't know which were his own or his self in the past. Finally, the girl spoke up, reassuring him that her name was indeed Lexi, and then asked how he was.
"I am alright. Sorry I didn't remember your name. Well, technically I did, but you know...having to ask..." Ryan spoke as he blushed slightly at his horrid attempt at an apology. Luckily, she hadn't got offended like half the others did when he had to half ask their name. He drew his legs up underneath him indian style as he listened to her next question, which made note of his sudden disappearance yesterday.
"Oh! Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I've been getting," He trailed off for a moment as his hand began to clutch his right side, right on his rib cage. It took everything in his power not to just spit out that he was bitten by something. He wanted to so badly, but something in the back of his mind kept telling him to forget it. "Sorry." Ryan said, shaking his head and blushing slightly. "Anyways, I've been getting these really bad headaches. The doctors say that it's just my mind trying to reintroduce memories back into my frontal lobe. Makes me think if it is worth remembering." He gave off a sharp chuckle but quickly cut it off, not knowing if he struck and nerve with that or not.
"You didn't do anything wrong." Ryan quickly added, rubbing his side to try and get the new forming pain to go back down. "In fact, you helped a lot. I don't know what it was, but my mind seemed to go clear being around you."

Obviously, yesterday hadn't been her day, but then again it hadn't been her year. But Ryan seemed better, happier and maybe even a little less anxious and that made her feel better instantly. "I am alright. Sorry I didn't remember your name. Well, technically I did, but you know...having to ask..." Lex's fake smile turned real, and she even gave a small laugh "It's fine, i know this must be hard on you..." She blushed, hoping she hadn't gone too far. ""Oh! Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I've been getting," Suddenly his hand rushed to his side, evidently in pain and Lexi gave him a concerned and confused look. Quickly, though he responded again, but the worry didn't leave her. But then again she never did.
"Sorry." Ryan continued on, he shook his head and blushed a little. "Anyways, I've been getting these really bad headaches. The doctors say that it's just my mind trying to reintroduce memories back into my frontal lobe. Makes me think if it is worth remembering." Lexi nodded, preferring to listen in situations like these where she didn't quite no what to say without hurting him. Listening was easier. "Did they say how long it'll take for it to come back? I mean.." Lexi blushed deeply and mumbled "If... if at all" Feeling guilty and horrid, she bit her lip and stared at the ground again."Uh. i'm.. i'm sorry. That was pretty bad.. i'm-" she stopped herself, before she could make things any worse. Shaking her head, she traced a pattern in the ground with the tip of her finger. Blood rushed to her already burning cheeks. And part of her wanted to tell him that his past was worth remembering, well at least most of it.
"You didn't do anything wrong." Ryan told her while rubbing his side, which seemed to hurt more and more."In fact, you helped a lot. I don't know what it was, but my mind seemed to go clear being around you." This made her smile. a lot. Being a help was the least she could do. With a relieved sigh a little bit of the guilt went away, washing away and being replaced with content. "Thanks, thats good to hear. And.. are you okay?" She hesitantly stuck her hand out, hovering over the side he happened to be clutching. "It looks like it hurts pretty badly?..."

Ryan couldn't help but give off another smile of his own as the girl beside him placed one out in the open. It was strange really. It wasn't a situation to be smiled at, but just seeing her smile made him want to do it back. Maybe she really was his girlfriend and those feelings, although forgotten, were still down there somewhere just beginning to resurface on the edge of his insanity. He watched her face carefully, noting every little gesture, including her slight blush that formed after his little speech. Once again, a smiled formed across his lips, and he made note of the feelings that were beginning to resurface. "It's fine, i know this must be hard on you..." She stated. Nodding a bit, Ryan spoke. "It's gotta be hard on you too. I mean, I am, or was, or...at one point your boyfriend. I'm sure you looking at me and seeing the past, but me speaking like this must be...confusing as well as heartbreaking." Okay, so he was a little blunt about it, but he didn't really know how to phrase that the right way.
Worry was still plastered on Lexi's face like cement, and it made Ryan a little nervous. Did she already know about the bite? Maybe he had gotten it before all this happened, and she knew what was going on. After his pathetic excuse (though the headaches weren't a lie, nor the doctors visits), the girl spoke up. "Did they say how long it'll take for it to come back? I mean.." She trailed off into a low mumble, but for some reason he could hear it plain as day. "If...if at all." Ryan blinked for a moment, not paying attention that he heard her clearly, but at the fact of what she said. Just before he could speak up, she started to apologize followed by another blush or two.
"No, you are alright. I understand how it is, which is very confusing. Trust me." He gave a small grin before answering the question. "They say it might take a month or two, but my brain doesn't show any signs of damage. Which is good. They say I am suffering from post-traumatic shock, and that my brain has repressed most of my memories to try and erase what's happened." He wrinkled his nose a bit. "Then again they could be lying." He made a funny frown then chuckled and grinned once again.
Lexi sat there for a moment, taking it all in before speaking up, telling him that she was glad she didn't do anything wrong again, and then made mention about his side. His heart instantly dropped and his head began to get even more fuzzy, if at all possible, as well as throb a bit. "Y-yeah. Just a scratch..." He sighed, feeling his stomach churn from lying to the one person that he actually felt good around. "Okay, it's a bite." He finally confessed, thinking that the pain would ease, but it just grew a bit stronger and his heart began to pound. "The docs don't know what bit me, mainly cause I can't remember. It's a factor in my memory loss though. They say it might have caused the shock."

It was confusing and scary. What if he never remembered, or never fully? People would never understand, and it would be a big pain in the ass for him. But he smiled like it wasn't bothering him at all, even though Lexi knew him better than to believe it. "It's gotta be hard on you too. I mean, I am, or was, or...at one point your boyfriend. I'm sure you looking at me and seeing the past, but me speaking like this must be...confusing as well as heartbreaking. Yes. Heartbreak was exactly what it was. It wasn't just heartbreaking that he was in this state, but heart wrenching because all she could do was watch. Neither of them seemed to be too sure about the whole boyfriend/ girlfriend thing, but the way that it had to be phrased just to explain things like this, it was just sad. "Yeah... i mean, i'm confused and it's sad and i wish i could be more help.. but i just can't. Theres nothing to do besides watch it all happen and feel whatever comes with it."
She didn't believe him about the doctors- the headaches in particular, no not really. But at the time, if it really had been just a scratch then she would've let it be. The pain seemed to have spread and continued on spreading, and he continued to downplay it, responding to her question about how long his amnesia would last, and when he said only a month or two , she did feel very relieved. At least that way it wouldn't last too long, and he wouldn't become overly frustrated with it. "my brain doesn't show any signs of damage. Which is good. They say I am suffering from post-traumatic shock, and that my brain has repressed most of my memories to try and erase what's happened. Then again they could be lying." He frowned a little, but it left as quickly as it came and a smile with a slight chuckle replaced it. She watched his face carefully, not wanting to step onto thin ice. But everything about him read regular Ryan, maybe just a twinge more agitated. Except for his side.
When she asked him about it, at first he told her it was just a scratch. She didn't believe that at all. Ryan was just about doubled over clutching his side in pain and he looked pail, still trying to pass whatever that thing was off as a little scratch. Even though there was no doubt he was lying, she kept her face calm and decided to not say anything, at least for the time being. He sighed, sounding miserable and fear crept into her, locking her throat and making speaking nearly impossible. "okay, it's a bite." Ryan confessed, though it didn't seem to make a difference for anything but the worst. A bite? Bitten by what? Godzilla? What kinda of bite could be that big, and cause that much pain? "The docs don't know what bit me, mainly cause I can't remember. It's a factor in my memory loss though. They say it might have caused the shock." Whatever it was, she wished it would go away because the pain seemed to be taking over him. Wide eyed and pale, Lexi had no idea what to say. "Holy crap.. A bite?! Are you okay? Should we take you up to the hospital wing?"

"Yeah... i mean, i'm confused and it's sad and i wish i could be more help.. but i just can't. Theres nothing to do besides watch it all happen and feel whatever comes with it." The brunette beside him spoke up, making Ryan's own heart swell slightly for her. He felt so badly that all this was happening. He'd give anything to remember, not only for her sake, but for his as well. His head was constantly fuzzy with garbled thoughts that he could not decipher. Every now and again he would get a break, like being caught in the eye of a hurricane, and then he could remember some things, but then the storm came back and he couldn't dig any deeper again.
Ryan gave a slight nod after Lexi finished talking, trying to show her that he understood, but at the same time had no more words to say for this situation. He told her about his doctors visits and then about the scratch, each time the pain in his head swelled slightly, and Lexi grew even more worried. He clutched his side with his right hand, starting to breathe a little heavy as he did so. His head pounded in a rhythm with his heart. Both went slow at first, but as he kept talking about it all, they sped up causing his face to go pale and a cold sweat break out over his pores.
"Holy crap.. A bite?! Are you okay? Should we take you up to the hospital wing?" Lexi spoke up, worry thick in her voice. Ryan scooted an inch away from her, the best he could do due to the pain all over him. He half scoffed, half growled before speaking up in an agitated voice. "No! No more hospital visits, no more poking and proding. I'm done! I just want to remember, and if I have to halfway die in the process. So be it." At that he got up and started to walk away, though it was slow and drunk-like. His eyes began to burn and his vision turned red. He knew he had to get away from Lexi, but he didn't know how he could when he was walking slower than a turtle due to all the pain. What was going on with him?

Or at least just a normal one. Normal bites don't make you ill, not fatally. Normal bites didn't cause you headaches, yes she had pieced two and two together to make four and figured the bite left him with many dangerous side effects. Headaches, and feverish behavior and a cold sweat would not be hard to see, and Ryan had all of them. Concern was pouring out of Lexi. She asked him about taking him to the hospital, hoping something could do something to make him better.Really, she just wanted the Ryan she remembered back. Of course, it was a ridiculous request, but she couldn't help but hope. Hope he would wake up, memory all there, bite gone and be her Ryan again. Wake up as her best friend, the person that melted her heart with a stupid smile. Her Ryan. The person who left her feeling content. The thought of him never being the same again was terrifying.
When he spoke he was sounding angry again. "No! No more hospital visits, no more poking and proding. I'm done! I just want to remember, and if I have to halfway die in the process. So be it."That stung, but she swallowed it quickly, blinking back that comment. All she really wanted was to help. Of course, she had done enough. But when he got up, she felt like he might as well have smacked her. Alright, that was just unfair. Leaving her again? Right. Whatever. Not like Lexi cared. Within seconds of thinking that to herself, she was on her feet with humiliated indignation. Angry tears stung her eyes but she blinked back those too.
Ryan, who was trying to storm away, instead was staggering like he was wasted. He wasn't going any faster than your average neighborhood snail, but Lexi wasn't quite sure whether it was a good idea to grab hold of him.He seemed to be in a dangerous state of mind, angry and seeing a bloodshot red. Feeling helpless, she tried to speak but only found one of the tear she had been holding back slip out. Stumbling forward, Lexi wiped the stupid tear away. "Ry. Stop walking away! What did i do?" She grabbed for his hand hoping to either take him to a doctor or get him to see reason.

Ryan's head grew so clouded to the point he couldn't think. Reaching up with his hands, he ran his fingers trough the sides of his hair, getting a firm grip as he rode out a wave of ebbing pain. It seemed to each wave of pain made his heart beat faster, his skin grow colder, and the sweat pour faster. Panting now seemed to be the only thing that he could get out as he kept staggering away from the girl. What was going on with him? Was he always like this? Oh he would kill to know the answers to his past at this moment, just to see if maybe Lexi was right and he did need to take a trip tot he hospital wing.
Staggering, Ryan panted and slightly growled, now taking his hands from his head and wrapping them around his stomach, doubling over in pain as he kept walking. His stomach, as well as every other organ in his body, now felt like they were lit on fire and about to explode. His skin even began to grow hot, going from a deep chill to a red hot in a matter of seconds. He couldn't take this. He needed to muster up the strength to go out into a full on run. That's when he heard her behind him.
"Ry. Stop walking away! What did i do?" Lexi said. She threw out her hand and tried to grab a hold of him. It was in that split second that they touched and his mind cleared, but a blind rage came over him and he jerked his free hand around and hit her across the face with it, leaving a staggering scratch down her cheek. For a moment Ryan didn't know what to do or say, not only for the fact that he had done that, but also for the fact that he had actually scratched her. Looking down at his hands he could see thick yellow claws in place of his old white fingernails. His eyes turned a sharp yellow and then he took off, now running with out his little drunk stagger, trying to get as far away as he could.

This wasn't how it was supposed to be, no. Not. At. All. This thought had crossed her mind a million times since she first saw Ryan again. But now... Well, now it rang more true than ever before. And now it was bad. All she had tried to do was stop him, but throwing out her hand like that had been stupid. But truthfully, she had known that from the start. Growing up, her father had been drunk more than not. She knew when it was time to just let people go, when they were beyond a point of reason and listening. Ryan was far past that. But for some strange reason she didn't quite understand, she just couldn't watch him go. Maybe, maybe it was the gripping fear she had that he would leave again and this time never return.
When he finally stopped moving was when she had reached out. For two seconds everything was still and she couldn't think, breathe or move. Then a fury she had never seen before, one unlike anything else in the world had come over him. And he hit her. In all their years of friendship he had never really yelled, and certainly never hit her. A searing pain was in her left cheek. This too, was unlike anything she had ever experienced. She staggered backwards two small steps and lifted a hand to the red skin on her face. To her horror, it was an awful scratch. How a persons fingernails could dig so deeply she could not fathom. Blood was coming from the scratch. Lexi could not handle the scent of blood. Instantly her vision went a little fuzzy around the corners and her breathing became slightly raspy.
For about thirty seconds, they just stoop there. When he too realized he had scratched her they stood in awe, looking at the long claws he had grown, and the yellow eyes that were staring back at her. Then he tried to run again, this time with out the stagger, the only thing allowing her to catch up to him. "Ryan?" All the tears she had held back came flooding out, and she stumbled forward. Nothing was right. She couldn't see. The scratch would probably scar, and everybody would question her about it. Blood's scent was tingling her nose and she tripped, falling over a stray root from the bleach white tree beside the lake. He would probably get away, and she would just injure herself more. Getting up took more work than she ever thought possible. But she couldn't just watch him run away, not again. "Please... Stop?.." Her voice was soft but she was sure he would be able to hear her anyways. Not that it would stop him. Nothing ever did.

What was going on with him? Ryan kept trying to run, only making a fast jog down the little stretch of shore that separated the grass from the school's lawn from the black lake. His legs felt like they had lead bricks tied at the ankles, making him drag his feet in the washed out brown sand, keeping him from getting to the pace that he needed to be. Everything was wrong, or was it? Was this how he was really suppose to be? So many questions and yet no answers, but that's how it always was with these things. It was expected, though he always had hope, hope that he would just fall, hit his head, and it would all go back to normal, he would remember the life he once had, and this bite on his side would not bother him anymore cause he would know all the answers. That was when he tripped.
It felt like a lifetime from the moment his foot caught hold of the buried branch and his body twisted to the time his back finally hit the sand. Only one sentence made it's way into his brain, carried by the only voice the he had loved. "Please... Stop?.." It was a faint whisper, but he could hear it clearly, soft and delicate against his ear. With a thud Ryan came crashing down in an explosion of sand. Fury ran through his veins and he kicked and clawed at the brown grain, sending up more as he stood back up with a growl. Yellow eyes glanced down the bit of shore and locked eyes with those soft brown ones. And then, memories came pouring in.
It was like watching an incoming storm. First it was soft and gentle, almost quite peaceful as he saw Lexi revolve around him in splendid delight. Then the storm hit. His head swarmed with so many different things, mainly all the times he had spent with Lexi, like their first encounter in the great hall when he had just started school, then when they had gotten together after Rhys had cheated on her with his own ex-girlfriend. 'STOP!" He screamed out, his hands going to his head as if to calm the pain. Then it all did. Poof, like it had never happened. His eyes opened slowly, exposing their bright yellow irises down the shore to the kneeling girl. His vision was blurred, red and distorted as if peering out of an animal's sight.
"Lexi?" Ryan's voice quivered and a single tear lid down his cheek. How could he have done this? Part of him wanted to blame not remembering for those few short days, but the rest of him said it was his fault. He was a monster. With an angry growl, Ryan turned and took off, his legs now free of their inability to gain speed, and he ran with all his might down the stretch of shore, faster than ever before, until he disappeared behind the trees.
