Katherine ran through the Slytherin common room and straight up to her dorm. Tears streamed down her face causing her dark makeup to run down her cheeks. The girl was a mess. Her black and emerald robe had a huge tear on the bottom. Kat kneeled down on the floor next to her bed and pulled out a small wooden box. She rummaged through the papers in the box, leaving old photos and newspaper clippings scattered on the floor. The girl pulled out an old-ish looking photograph. She left the box open on the cold stone floor.
Katherine climbed onto her bed and sat there Indian style examining the photo. It was a picture of her family, her family of lies. Kat’s tears fell onto the sheets of her bed as she stared, blurry-eyed, at the paper in her hands. Her fake mother and her fake father, her fake brothers and sisters all stared back at her. It was painful for the fifteen year old to look at, but she couldn’t seem to rip her eyes away from it.
The girl’s mind at this moment was a scrambled mess. Her thoughts and questions collided and crashed into each other. Nothing made sense to her. Everything was a lie and nothing was the truth. Katherine didn’t know what to believe. Deep down she still cared for the people that raised her. She would have never guessed that this whole family had kept the secret for fifteen whole years, almost sixteen. Yes, Kat knew that she didn’t look like any of her siblings, but it never phased her.
Katherine gave the photo one last look. She pulled her wand out of her knee sock where she kept it. Kat held the photo out in front of her by a corner with one hand. With her other hand she held her wand. “Incendio,” she muttered. A small flame flickered at the tip of her wand. She held the tip of her wand at the corner of the photograph until it caught the fire. Katherine sat there and watched the photo slowly burn, her family of lies slowly being devoured by the flames. She placed her wand beside her on the bed. The fire caused the picture to shrivel up in her hands. The corners gradually blackened and fell onto the surface of her bed.
Kat sat there, a flaming piece of paper burning the tips of her fingers. The pain didn’t even make her flinch; she just sat there holding the mass of fire. A reflection of the flames could be seen in her yellow eyes. A single tear fell from her eye and onto her lap. Katherine knew that someone was standing in the threshold of the dorm, but the girl didn’t know that the person had been watching her since she ran past the common room. She shut her eyes and smothered the flames with her bare hand, crushing the paper. The ashes fell out from in between her fingers.

Reece had found it slightly awkward to be back living in the dorms since she was at least two years older than most of her fellow students. Most of her friends had already graduated by the time she returned to finish her seventh year, and all that was left were the younger students that she saw as younger siblings. Girls like Kat and Eleni whom she felt protective over. She couldn't keep her father or her older brother safe, and she hadn't been able to protect Eleni from that psycho. She had been sitting in a dark corner of the common room researching the psycho, when Kat ran by to her dorm.
Reece's blue eyes followed the girl, and she frowned. Something was clearly wrong, but before she could call out to her friend, she was gone. She glanced around at some of the other students in the common room, noting that few of them paid any notice. With a small sigh, she packed up her things into her messenger bag, threw it over her shoulders, and walked quickly to Kat's dorm. She paused in the doorway and leaned against the wall, her arms crossed, watching the girl. She watched in silence as Kat took out a photo and as she burned it.
Reece didn't step in to stop her, though most people probably would have. No, she knew that this was something Kat needed to do to help her deal with this...whatever this was. She tilted her head as Kat closed her eyes and crushed the burnt photo. Softly, she said, "You're making an awful mess on your bed there, dear," She took a small step into the room, but stayed leaning against the wall, and continued, "What's wrong, Kat?"[/blockquote] Note: Not my best, sorry! A FISTFUL OF LIES, DRESSED UP IN DISGUISE, A N D . M A K E . N O . M I S T A K E - - - - - - - - I KNOW THEY'RE ALL SO FAKE. A soft comforting voice spoke from the doorway. “You’re making an awful mess on your bed there, dear.” Katherine looked down at her sheets. Patches of ash and soot covered the surface. Truthfully she didn’t care. She might as well set the whole dungeon on fire, then who would notice the ash on her bed? Kat opened her eyes, which, at the moment, were bright yellow and flooded with anger, confusion, and hatred. Evidence of tears were visible on her face. Water flooded her eyes and her washed out black makeup streaked down her face. Reece was standing by the door. If it was any other person at the door, she would probably hex them into the next century or light them on fire along with the rest of the room.
Reece was one of the very few people that Kat trusted. It took a lot to get to the girl. The only other people that had managed that were her cousin Madelyn, whom she grew up with, and her only friend, Lucy. “What’s wrong, Kat?” Reece asked. “You wouldn’t understand.” Katherine stated through clenched teeth. There was no easy way to describe what was happening to her. She knew that no one would really understand. There were too many questions that were left unanswered, too many gaps that needed to be filled. Kat looked down at the ashes in her hands. Those ashes contained what she believed to be her family. She held a fistful of lies.
Tears began to swell up in the girl’s eyes. She really didn’t know how to describe her situation to Reece. She didn’t even know if she could classify it as being ‘a situation.’ Katherine used the back of her hand to wipe some of the tears from her face, and in the process, she smudged her makeup more. She lifted her wand, “Accio box,” she said. The box that she had left open on the floor floated up to her. Kat grasped the box and rummaged through it, looking for more pictures to burn. She sighed as she pulled out another picture of her family of liars and placed it on the bed in front of her. Katherine didn’t care how many times she had been scorched by the flames and kept going back for more. As she lit her wand, she wondered if Reece would let her continue burning photos.

Reece watched as the girl looked up at her, and saw the anger, confusion, and hatred in her yellow eyes. Something had happened, something dramatic that had pushed this girl, her friend, to break. The tears had made a mess of her makeup and she, ironically, somewhat resembled a messy cat. Rather than walking over to Kat to comfort her, Reece remained where she was standing, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She tilted her head slightly to the side as Kat answered, "You wouldn't understand." A small, sad smile crossed her face as she continued to watch Kat and the ashes. "You'd be surprised, dear, at what I would and wouldn't understand." It wasn't difficult for Reece to understand the problems of others. Her mind was a pensieve, a living pensieve. She could touch objects or people and literally suck up the memory or memories in it. It was what she called a memory transfer. She could store these memories and call them back up, if necessary, but she could never get rid of them. They were permanently recorded in her brain. The biggest problem for Reece, though, was that she had no control over it. She never knew if or when a transfer might occur. The easiest way was physical skin contact, the most direct link. But a transfer didn’t occur every time, and she couldn’t realistically avoid physical contact with everyone and everything. For that she would have to literally live in a bubble. Sometimes she could walk into a room, pass a person or area with memories so strong that she was bombarded with it as an autonomous transfer occurred, usually resulting in her passing out. And within these memories she could see and feel everything the people in the memories experienced. But she had no control over it. So as she watched Kat and her emotions, and the way she looked through the box, burning more photos, a thought occurred to her. She had no idea if it would work, but maybe, just this once, it would. So gently she pushed herself off the wall and walked over to Kat, sitting on the end of the bed. Slowly and hesitantly she reached forward and cupped a pile of the ashes in her hands. Success! As soon as her skin contacted the ashes Reece was hit with an overwhelming tugging feeling, and then the world was spinning like a whirlpool. She was sucked back into Kat's memory; thrown back into the forest. She watched the scene play out as Kat and the other girl, Brookelynn met and as the other girl read the letter revealing the truth: They were sisters and Kat had been adopted and had never been told. All of a sudden the world spun again and Reece returned to her reality. Her body slumped to the floor but she only lost consciousness for a second. She straightened up and took a deep breath before pulling herself back up to the edge of the bed and sitting next to Kat. She sat there, silent, for a few minutes and then spoke, "Kat, I can't pretend to know how you feel. I've never had the same...I've never been in that situation." She took a slow breath and then turned to look at Kat, taking the box from her and looking through it. "Listen, you're pissed, and confused, and I get that. But...just because they didn't tell you, doesn't mean they don't love you. For them, you are their daughter."[/blockquote] Note: Semi epic. Ish. Haha.
