It was a nice day out, by Evan’s standards. Not too cold, not too hot, the sun wasn’t shining so bright that he couldn’t see what he was trying to draw, and it wasn’t raining. So Evan sat out on the front steps of the castle, his sketchpad in his lap, extra pencils and erasers in his pockets, and an image in his head.
Evan had always admired the Black Lake, with its dark beauty and reflective surface, so he’d decided to draw a picture of it. Not a realistic picture, though…this one was going to be special. Around it he added a series of magical creatures, like a phoenix in the sky and a shadow that might have been a mermaid lurking below the lake’s surface. As he drew, Evan's mind began to wander.
”That’s very good. You’re a wonderful artist.” Evan looked up, and turned to see a girl standing behind him, looking over his shoulder. She had curly red hair that fell past her shoulders.
“Really? You think so?” he asked quietly. “It’s not finished…”
She sat down next to him. “No, it’s lovely,” she told him with a smile. “I wish I could draw like that.” Evan shrugged. “It’s not at all hard,” he said. “At least, not for me. I only have trouble thinking of things to draw.”
“Hmm,” said the girl, leaning over. She pointed to a blank section of the page. “What are you going to put there?” she asked him. Evan shook his head sadly. “I can’t think of anything,” he told her. “I don’t know what I could draw there.” It was a small patch of a grass on the lakeside, looking far too empty. It needed something, but Evan just didn’t know what.
“I think you should draw a centaur,” the girl said. “They’re such beautiful creatures, after all.” Evan smiled at her…
A burst of obnoxious laughter brought him out of his daydreaming. Evan glanced down and saw his drawing just as it had been, with that annoyingly blank spot…
His pencil moved quickly over the page, confident, with no pauses or corrections. First the legs, then the stomach…
When he was finished, an image of a beautiful female centaur with curly red hair filled the gap.
