Ah, Christmas time, one of the happiest times of the year, supposedly. This time last year Gemma had been holed up at her parents house, ignoring all their snide remarks, and her sister's goading to plaster a smile on her face and fake happy for Izzie. Gemma had hated the false cheeriness that had invaded the house, her entire family trying to get their differences aside for the season in vain. The holiday had still been rife with tension and it had been impossible to get into the spirit, though Gem had tried her best for Isadora's sake. She had genuinely enjoyed her daughter's joy, at her fascination with all the brightness of the occasion, and her innocent ignorance of the situation she had inadvertently caused. This year was going to be different, and Gemma found herself as excited for the holiday at eighteen as she had been ten years ago.
She had reason to be. This year had turned out better then Gemma could have ever imagined. Coming back to school had reminded Gemma of all the things she had missed while she was gone. Reconnecting with Adriana was fantastic, Gemma had missed her best friend and it was such a relief to have someone that was just there for her. Even after disappearing for two years their relationship was exactly where it had been with Gem had left, as if someone had just paused for a moment. Adri was the person who knew everything about Gemma, and Gem told Adri everything, knowing that she would always be there to lend an ear. As for Dem Gemma had entirely forgotten how amusing the man was, with all his antics and it was always fun catching up with her old friend. And of course there had been the one person that Gemma hadn't been able to forget.
Seeing Blaze again, at the beginning of the year, had reopened a vault of emotions that Gemma had been so sure that she had locked away. It had killed her, hearing about his wedding and Gemma had believed that he had moved on, and that she needed to do the same, but it seemed that the exact opposite wanted to happen. Discovering that Blaze was Isadora's father, after she had been so sure that Potter was the daddy, was, without a doubt, one of the happiest moments in her life, and since that day things had only seemed to be picking up. That he had asked her to marry him seemed completely surreal to Gemma and she was still trying to wrap her head around the fact that she was now engaged. Just the thought brought a happy flush to her cheeks, her lips curling into an involuntary smile.
The twenty fifth was only a week or so off, and Gemma still hadn't finished buying all her gifts, and so when the weekend came she had picked up Isadora, bundling her up in her coat and mitts, heading out to Hogsmeade to pick up her last minute things. In truth, the only person that Gemma was done buying for was Izzie, solely for the fact that Gem found it impossible not to buy things for her daughter. The little girl was spoiled rotten, and Gemma was helpless to stop it. Gem knew that Blaze wasn't any better when it came to their daughter, and with Adriana in the mix as well Isadora had no shortage of affection, which was just perfect in Gem's eyes. Izzie was her life, and Gem wanted to be able to give her daughter everything she possibly could. However, going overboard on Isadora's present didn't make up for the fact that she still hadn't gotten anything for her other friends. She was just at a complete loss at what to get everyone.
Since she had no particular gifts in mind Gemma resigned herself to browsing around the stores until the right things caught her eye. Adjusting her hold on Izzie, who was propped on her hip, one tiny hand tangled into Gems hair, the other stretching out into the air in front of her, trying to catch the delicate snow flakes that were drifting around them, dusting the pair. Laughing softly at the expression on her daughter's face Gemma gently pried Izzie hand from her curls, brushing little drops of melted snow from her daughter's face. It was all that cold, considering the weather and Gemma has hard pressed to think of a better way to spend the afternoon. Tightening her arms around Izzie as the toddler lunged forward, intent on snatching a particularly large snowflake Gemma chuckled, "Silly girl,"

“Yeah, sure mom,” Laci Ackerley mumbled, rolling her eyes as she descended the stairs. She didn’t really care what her mom asked her, she’d find out and do it later. Being cooped up inside the house all of Winter Break wasn’t helping the fifteen year old at all. In fact, it was making her mind run wild and scream. It was nearly Christmas Eve and the girl had barely left the house once. Ever since her older sister got pregnant and left, their mother has practically kept Laci in a cage with no way out. The girl was tired of that. She usually had some tolerance for her parents, but at the moment her patience had worn thin. Lace was tired of being stuck inside, sheltered from the vast world around her. She wanted to get out and explore.
Laci’s tan plaid jacket hung neatly from the hat stand in the front hallway. She ripped it down off the hook causing a hat and a scarf to fall to the polished wood floor. Lace had her hand on the doorknob, ready to finally leave the cage when her mother’s voice was heard coming from the kitchen. “Can you pick that up sweetie? And where are you going?” Laci wanted to leave the clothes right where they were and just walk out. How did she even know that the stuff fell? Her mother was in the other room! Lace resisted the urge to rebel against her parents, no matter how much she wanted to. She picked up the hat and scarf and hung them neatly from the rack. “I’m going out mom, I’ll be back in a little while.” She put her jacket on and grabbed her bag. Her mother yelled to the front door, asking questions like: Whom are you going with? Who’s going to be there? What are you doing? Laci wanted to ignore these questions because she truthfully didn’t know where she was going, or who was going to be there. “I’m going by myself, no one is going to be there, and I’m not sure what I’m doing,” the girl yelled back down the hall. She opened the door, letting the chilled, snowy wind blow her hair back and cause her to shiver.
Laci stepped out into the blinding glow of the afternoon snowdrift and headed out toward Hogsmeade. She would surely find someone there that she knew from school or something like that.
----------------------------------------------------
The young Ackerley girl strolled up the snow covered street in Hogsmeade peering through the store front windows for something to catch her eye. “Silly girl,” she overheard someone say. The voice sounded extremely familiar. Laci spun around and saw the person that she dreaded the most, the girl that she didn’t want to see at the moment. Gemma. Her sister was holding her daughter, Isadora, propped up on her hip. As much as she disliked what her sister had done, her child was absolutely adorable. Lace noticed that she had caught her sister’s attention. She waved at Gemma. “Hey Gem, hello Izzie,” she said. She couldn’t just walk away from her sister like she barely knew her. The two of them grew up together, they were related. As much as she despised her sister now, she couldn’t help but envy her. When Gem still lived in the Ackerley household, Laci envied her for being the favorite. When Gem left the house permanently, Laci envied her for rebelling against their parents. Lace looked up to her older sister, even if the two of them always fought. Lately the fighting had gotten worse. The girl had run out of luck and was running into her older sister almost every time she left the Hufflepuff dorm. The coincidences were getting quite crazy at this point.
Laci walked up to her sister and her daughter, gently brushing the snowflakes out of her blonde, curly hair. The girl hoped, for Merlin’s sake, that her sister wasn’t going to say anything rude to her. She just wasn’t in the mood to be pushed around like that. She sighed and stood in front of her sister, waiting to find out if she should stay and chat or just leave and forget that they ever ran into each other today.

Looking around to decided which shop she would give a go first Gemma's gaze landed instantly on a familiar face, her smile fading quickly to a scowl. Laci Ackerley was not a person that Gemma had wanted to see today, or anytime in the near future. Things had always been rocky with the two siblings, and their relationship was as far from perfect as one could possibly get. Before Gemma had gotten pregnant there really hadn't been an actual rift between the two girls, but Gemma had just been too busy, balancing her extravagant social life and getting good enough grades that her parents would leave her questionable social life alone, to deal with a younger sister always trailing her around. After Izzie's birth things had quickly spiraled downwards, almost too fast for the change to register for Gemma. Maybe there had been something she had missed but all she knew was that her sister hadn't wasted any time, climbing right up onto the pedestal that Gemma had previously occupied. And that would have been okay with Gemma, if the new attitude that Laci bore towards her hadn't accompanied it. Their parents wouldn't be satisfied with Laci for long. They had a younger brother who was prime for snatching away Laci's spotlight, and Gemma would have almost felt sorry for her if Laci hadn't sided with their mother during the pregnancy. All the goading and boasting, as if Gemma really cared anymore, grated on her nerves, which was mostly the reason Gem couldn't stand her younger sister. There was also that small twinge of betrayal, the Laci had taken their mother's side, instead of standing with her that Gemma was finding impossible to forgive.
Bending her face into towards Izzie's Gem whispered softly, "Look, here comes the big bad aunt of the west." While Isadora had no comprehension of the tension between the two siblings she still giggled at her mother and the sound helped brighten Gemma's mood enough that she managed to fix a civil smile on her face as Laci stopped in front of them. "Hello Laci. Out running errands for mother dearest?" The words themselves weren't all that bad, but the cold dry tone was enough to get her point across, hopefully. It was becoming increasingly more hard to avoid the younger Ackerley. At school it seemed like she was everywhere, and Gemma had taken to holing up in the Slytherin common room with Adri or spending time in Blaze's office just to ensure that she wouldn't see the girl. Here in Hogsmeade though, she was stuck. She didn't want to cause a scene when she had Izzie with her, and it wasn't like she could make some excuse about classes or schoolwork and just walk off. Sighing, Gemma looked down at Isadora, who had remained silent throughout the exchange. The little girl had buried her face in the shoulder of Gemma's jacket, peeking out at Laci through the fine fringe of hair the fell across her forehead, bright green eyes looking up at her aunt warily. Isadora had always been shy, and Gemma had made sure since coming back to school that Izzie spent as little time as possible with the Ackerley's, so it was understandable that the her daughter wasn't comfortable around Laci. The little girl spent more time with Adriana then she did with her biological aunt, something that Gemma wouldn't say she disapproved out.
Tilting her head down Gemma kissed the top of Isadora's head, "Hey Iz, think you can manage a hello for Aunt Laci?" The toddler remained silent and Gemma shrugged at Laci in a 'what can you do' sort of way. She certainly wasn't going to force her daughter to make nice with Laci when she wasn't willing to do the same. Looking back up at Laci Gemma clumsily adjusted her toque with her left hand, her right arm holding Isadora up. The tip of Isadora's nose was turning red and though it wasn't cold enough to be a real issue Gemma wanted to get inside as soon as possible. "I've got some shopping to do, so if you'll excuse me..." She trailed off, already making her way to the nearest shop. She didn't have a doubt that her sister would follow her, but there wasn't much she could do about that.

“Hello Laci. Out running errands for mother dearest?” Gemma said in a harsh tone, a forced smile plastered to her face. “Am I not allowed to leave the house without you thinking that I’m sucking up to someone?” Laci said. There was no point in being nice; her sister never even gave her a chance. “No, actually, I’m not, thank you very much. I’m trying to get away from the house.” All I said was hello and she treats me like crap, the younger Ackerley thought. Laci hated how her sister automatically thought of her as garbage. She honestly tried to be nice to Gemma, but Gem didn’t seem to take the hints.
A few weeks ago, Gemma had told her that the reason why she hated her was because she jumped into ‘the perfect daughter’ position right away. Laci didn’t think that it was a good reason to hate someone. Gem had been the favorite of the family for almost fifteen whole years. All little Laci wanted was her ten minutes of fame, and then she would have happily returned to her position. But no, Gem had to overreact and flip out on her little sister. Lace was never really noticed too much until her older sister moved out. She remembered one day very distinctly:
Little Laci stepped off of the Hogwarts Express, her first year at Hogwarts and she had passed with flying colors. She ran over to her parents, a little mouse in one hand and her birch-wood wand in the other. “Mum, Dad! Look what I learned!” Just then, Gemma walked over to the rest of the family with a roll of parchment in her hand. She handed the paper to their parents and they unrolled the paper. “Those are my grades for the semester,” her sister said plainly. “Mum, Dad, are you watching?” “Yes sweetie, I can see you,” their father said, both parents had their noses in the parchment. Laci was super excited to show her parents her transfiguration skills. She held the mouse out in one hand and flicked her wand with the other, just the way the teacher had taught it. The mouse that was once in her hand had transformed into a colorful snuffbox. Laci looked up and smiled to at her parents, “Did you see that?!” “Yes, that was good honey,” their mother said, “Miss Gemma Louise, you have done an excellent job this year.” Gemma just stood there nonchalantly. “But, you weren’t even looking,” Laci said. Her excitement was slowly turning to disappointment. She remained silent for the rest of the car ride home while her parents and older sister talked about stuff that the little eleven year old didn’t understand.
Laci snapped out of her flashback and looked at her sister and her daughter. “Hey Iz, think you can manage a hello for Aunt Laci?” The little girl remained silent, Gemma just shrugged. “It’s fine,” Laci managed to say. You can’t force a toddler to talk. Small amounts of anger and disappointment started to build up inside Laci. Every time she ran into her older sister, she turned into a blank page, letting all of Gem’s snide remarks bounce off of her. Gemma made all of the fifteen year old’s hopes and dreams seep out of her. Laci had always hoped that she would someday get along with her sister, but she knew that that day wouldn’t come soon.
“I’ve got some shopping to do, so if you’ll excuse me…” her sister’s voice trailed off. Gemma started to walk away. That was rude, Laci thought, her patience wearing thin. “You won’t even talk to your own sister for more than five minutes? Is that how it’s going to work?” She said bitterly as she walked after her sister. All she wanted was to have a civilized conversation with a family member and that, thanks to Miss Gemma Ackerley, was never going to happen.

Listening to her sister's defensive reply Gemma fought to hold back a smirk, the corners of her mouth twitching with the contained mirth. "Oh no, I'm sure you're allowed. It's just so out of character, I'm surprised you know how to do things for yourself." Gemma knew she was being a bitch, but quite frankly, she didn't care at all. Laci annoyed her, and the damn girl couldn't seem to get it through her bloody thick head that Gemma did not enjoy her company in any way, shape or form. If being full out rude to the younger girl worked the so be it. She could start to see how her attitude was wearing on her sister's nerves and Gemma hoped that she was finally getting her point across. Shaking her head slightly Gemma pushed open the door to the nearest shop, welcoming the warm draft of hot air that pushed past her as she stepped inside. It was a novelty store, more trinkets and cute charms then anything, and Gemma doubted she'd find what she needed in here, but looking around was worth a shot. And if she was lucky, maybe Laci would get bored of trailing her around and leave her be.
Picking up a small, charmed toy Gemma rolled the small golden ball around in her palm, wondering what it did. The answer was clear in a few seconds, and the toy started to shift, the gold metal molding into a new shape. It was cute, and Gemma could feel it already starting to change again as she passed it up to Izzie to examine. The little girl smiled happily, pleased to have something to amuse her while Gemma was otherwise occupied. “You won’t even talk to your own sister for more than five minutes? Is that how it’s going to work? Just as she had expected. Laci had followed her into the store and Gemma suppressed a groan. Taking a deep breath Gemma moved further into the store, trying to find the right words to defuse her sister's obvious and growing anger. "Look Laci, I'm not here to play make believe with you. I don't like you, and I'm not sure why you insist on following me around like just talking is going to make everything magically better. I'm completely aware of how this must seem to you, but I really am not in the mood to deal with you right now. Christmas is less then two weeks away, and I have no idea what I'm getting Blaze and Adriana..." Sighing Gemma tried to soften the blow of what she had just said, "I am sorry, for everything that happened, but I don't regret what I did, and I'm learning to live with the consequences, so should you."
Brushing her bangs irritably away from her face a sparkle of light caught her attention from the corner of her eye. Knowing it was her ring that had caused the slight shine Gemma scolded herself for being so careless around Laci. Gemma didn't intend on telling her parents about the engagement until the last possible second, since she really didn't want her mother poking her nose into everything. Even if her mother was at odds with her right now Gemma knew that the older woman would relish the chance to control another aspect of Gem's life, and she refused to let that happen. Knowing Laci, if the younger girl noticed it wouldn't be much a secret for long. Hopefully Gemma had pissed her off enough that she wouldn't notice, and she dropped her hand, continuing the peruse through the items on the shelves.

“Oh no, I’m sure you’re allowed. It’s just so out of character, I’m surprised you know how to do things for yourself.” That comment made Laci beyond angry. She immediately snapped back at her sister. “I do know how to do things for myself by the way. I’m surprised that you can do things for others besides yourself.” Laci knew that her sister would find a way backfire what she said. She walked into the nearest shop, brushing the snow out of her blonde hair as she entered. A novelty store? Why would Gemma go in here?
“Look Laci, I’m not here to play make believe with you. I don’t like you, and I’m not sure why you insist on following me around like just talking is going to make everything better. I’m completely aware of how this must seem to you, but I really am not in the mood to deal with you right now. Christmas is less than two weeks away, and I have no idea what I’m getting Blaze and Adriana…” Each word hit Laci like a ton of bricks. She knew that her sister had a problem with her, but she didn’t know that she had the nerve to tell her that she flat out hated her. Laci wanted to run home and lock herself in her room. She wanted to cry, but she couldn’t let Gemma have the satisfaction. She knew that if she walked away now that her sister would think that she had won this one. Laci didn’t say anything. She just looked at her sister; even if she tried she wouldn’t be able to say anything.
Laci listened as her sister tried to soften the blow of what she had said. “I am sorry, for everything that happened, but I don’t regret what I did, and I’m learning to live with the consequences, so should you.” Laci wanted to scream at Gemma. She was not sorry for anything that happened. If she was truly sorry she wouldn’t have said some of the things she had. “You just lied. You are not at all sorry for anything that happened. I can tell,” Laci said as she fought to hold her emotions back.
The person that she had looked up to for her whole life had just told her that she basically wanted nothing to do with her. Laci Ackerley had never asked for much from her older sister who had just shut her out completely. The girl was on the verge of tears. As she turned around to look away from Gem, her blonde hair spun with her. Out of the corner of her tear filled eye, she saw an iridescent shine bounce off of her sister’s hand. The tears cleared from her eyes as she realized what the sparkle had come from. An engagement ring. Laci turned around to face her sister again, but this time an evil smirk played across her lips. This was her chance to get even with her sister. A dangerous sparkle appeared in her eyes as she spoke. “An engagement ring, eh? When’s the wedding?”

At her sister's word Gemma felt a hot bite of anger, a bitter taste in her mouth as she whirled around to face her sister, glaring down at the shorter girl as she spoke, her voice dangerously low and steady, contrasting the rage that seemed to punctuate each word. "Don't you dare tell me that I can't do anything for anyone else. I gave up two bloody years of my life for my daughter. I put up with the ridicule and shame from you and mother and every plain Jane and average Joe so that I could give my daughter a chance. Do you know how often I can hear them whispering my name in the hallways at school? You don't know anything Laci." Shaking her head with disgust Gemma turned away, her cheeks flushed and her eyes burning as she walked away, intending to leave her sister there. If that's what the girl honestly thought then good riddance. Gem had been right to try to separate herself from her family. The one place she should have been safe was the place that everything hurt the most. Gemma had tried her hardest, ignoring all the snide jabs and judgmental stares that her mother and sister had treated her to since she had gotten pregnant, pretending to brush them off, making believing that they were simply inconsequential, of no matter to her. It never really worked though, because they were the ones who were supposed to be there for her, the ones who supported her, a fact that made their actions and words so much stronger of a betrayal now.
Laci was right, Gemma wasn't sorry at all for what she had done. As far as she was concerned her family deserved this, after the hell that had put her through for the past two years and Gemma couldn't dredge up the slightest twinge of regret for the harsh words she had just thrown into her sister's face. However, the quiver in her sister's voice, that promised tears gave Gemma pause, and she turned back slowly to face Laci, taking a deep breath before she spoke, carefully thinking about what she was about to say. "You know what Laci, you're right. I'm not sorry. And I never will be, because what you and mom did to me was unforgivable. I'll bet you didn't know, that the day before I went into labour with Izzie, mom called me a two-cent whore. My own mother called me a whore." The speech was punctuated by a humorless laugh and Gemma went on. "That wasn't the end of it though, not even close. After that, she told me what a disappointment I was, and how ashamed she was of me. And I wouldn't have cared, if I hadn't seen my baby sister reciprocate that attitude right back at me."
Watching her sister turn away Gemma nearly sighed with relief, but it turned out that luck wasn't on her side today. As Laci spun back around to face her Gemma mentally prepared herself for whatever Laci would throw at her next. Glancing at Isadora Gemma cursed under her breath, realizing that the two sisters must had scared the little girl, who had her face pressed against Gemma's chest, tiny hands clutching at the shoulder of her jacket. "Oh honey, it's alright. Mommy just got a little excited, " Gemma whispered softly, trying to reassure her daughter as she gently patted the girl's back. Looking back up as Laci asked her a question Gemma was surprised by the smirk on her sister's lips. It seemed completely out of place, an expression she had never seen on Laci's face. Feeling her own lips twist to mirror the expression Gem braced herself for this new side of Laci. If the girl tried to use this against her she was going to be seriously disappointed. The fact that she was getting married made her ecstatic, and even if Laci threatened to tell the whole world it would only be a minor setback. "Haven't picked a date yet, but don't get too excited. I doubt there'll be an invitation heading your way."Knowing that that would piss her sister off Gemma enjoyed the words, waiting for Laci's reaction.

‘Three…two…one,' Laci counted down in her head until her sister turned the whole conversation around again. ‘Blast off.’ “Don’t you dare tell me that I can’t do anything for anyone else. I gave up two bloody years of my life for my daughter. I put up with the ridicule and shame from you and mother and every plain Jane and average Joe so that I could give my daughter the chance. Do you know how often I can hear them whispering my name in the hallways at school? You don’t know anything Laci.” Laci rolled her eyes, this was only the thousandth time that her sister had told that to her. That whole mess had nothing to do with the girl. “Actually, I know quite a lot,” Laci said with a smirk. “And first of all, sleeping around the school was not my decision, it was yours. Don’t go blaming your pregnancy on me,” she added on. It did sound like she was blaming the child on her. It wasn’t Laci’s fault that her older sister didn’t even know the father of the child. That was all Gem.
Laci knew that Gemma wasn’t sorry for anything she had just said or done. She could see it on her older sister’s face; not a twinge of regret. If there was something that Laci was good at, it was reading expressions and reading lips. She might have even been better than Gem at one point. Her sister started again. “You know what Laci, you’re right. I’m not sorry. And I never will be, because what you and mom did to me was unforgivable. I’ll bet you didn’t know, that the day before I went into labor with Izzie, mom called me a two-cent whore. My own mother called me a whore.” Laci wanted to yell at her sister, but she couldn’t muster up the confidence. Tears lined the girl’s eyes, threatening to fall. Laci held them back and spoke, “You know, that was the first time that you admitted that I was right, and I don’t have any control over what mom says to you.” She paused for a second, realizing something. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. So mom calling you a whore makes you mad at me? You make no sense sometimes.” A sarcastic tone surfaced in Laci’s voice, “I wasn’t even there…or maybe I was. I might have been invisible, NON-EXISTANT to everyone there. I wouldn’t know…” Gemma spoke again, “That wasn’t the end of it though, not even close.” Laci was beating herself up in her head for even leaving the house today. “After that, she told me what a disappointment I was, and how ashamed she was of me.” “THAT’S NOT MY FAULT. ITS YOURS!” she wasn’t even yelling, she just wanted Gemma to finally understand; either way Laci regretted that statement. The look on her sister’s face told her that she might as well jump out of the North Tower window when she got back to school. Lace clapped her hands over her mouth; her eyes were wide and a deep, emotional shade of green. “And I wouldn’t have cared, if I hadn’t seen my baby sister reciprocate that attitude right back at me.” Laci held her voice back. There was no way that Gemma was going to let her win this thing. She turned around, a single tear running down her cheek. At that point in Laci’s life, when she was eleven, she was torn between her mother and her older sister. She looked up to both of them as if they were heaven sent. Laci had wanted to be just like her sister ever since she could remember.
As the girl turned around, ready to break down and cry, she noticed the engagement ring on her sister’s hand. She wiped the tears from her face with her fingers; an evil smirk replaced the quivering lips. Laci hadn’t known about it until now, which meant that their parents probably didn’t know yet either. She now had some dirt. She asked Gemma when the wedding was planned for. “Haven’t picked a date yet, but don’t get too excited. I doubt there’ll be an invitation heading your way.” Those words pained Laci; her own sister didn’t tell her that she was getting married. She tried to hide the pain to get even with Gem. “Don’t worry, I know people. I’ll find out. And I don’t need an invitation, I’m your sister after all.” Laci smiled evilly, hiding the fact that her sister had crossed the final line. This side of Lace was new to all, even herself. Ever since her sister had returned to Hogwarts she had begun to develop a cruel streak, similar to her sister. Her new attitude was getting her places in life. She had a new boyfriend, a lot of guys had flirted with her, and the people that annoyed her had begun to leave her alone. She now understood why Gemma had her cruel streak; it got her what she wanted.
